Cape Reinga Kaitaia

Cape Reinga

The historic Cape Reinga lighthouse marks the extreme north-western point of New Zealand and is a place of special spiritual significance to Maori. Join a one-day tour to Cape Reinga which includes surfing the sand dunes, visiting the lighthouse at the very tip of New Zealand and driving on 90 Mile Beach. 90 Mile Beach and more

Ahipara is the beginning of 90 Mile Beach and is only 15 minutes away from Kaitaia. It is just one of the 40 beaches within a 40 minute drive of Kaitaia. Surf at Shippies (Shipwreck Bay), Rarawa, Hendersons or Taupo Bay, go horse riding along one of special beaches, try your hand at fishing, or quad bike along the beach.

Bone Carving

Try your hand at bone carving at Mainstreet Lodge. Bone carving is a traditional Maori art. Many New Zealanders wear a bone or greenstone carving around their neck as a symbol. At Mainstreet Lodge we have the facilities for you to make your own special symbol of your visit to New Zealand.

The Far North has some world-class walking tracks, in particular the Cape Reinga Coastal Walkway – one of New Zealands Great Walks. There are day walks and multi-day walks with spectacular coastal scenery and beaches. Arrangements can be made to drop you off at the beginning of a walk and pick you up at the end.

One of the highlights of all the bus trips to Cape Reinga is the chance to surf the huge sand dunes. If you choose to drive yourself up to the Cape, don’t forget to add this to your trip. Remember you can have the free use of our sandboards if you stay more than 2 nights.

Explore the edges of this huge, shallow harbour - the pure quartz sand is dazzling. This is just one of the harbours in the area you can explore. Others include the Houhora Harbour or the Hokianga Harbour and the expansive waters of Doubtless Bay, or the sheltered waters of the Whangaroa Harbour.
