Mainstreet Lodge Backpackers is centrally located in Kaitaia, only a short, flat walk to local restaurants, bars, supermarket, shops, bus stop and the excellent local i-Site. Tours to Cape Reinga leave daily from Kaitaia and are a great way to experience the Cape. Ahipara, the start of 90 Mile Beach is only 15 minutes away, and Doubtless Bay, just 30 minutes away. For those of us who are privileged to live here we are proud of our rich multicultural heritage. Visitors are welcomed by town signage in Maori, English, and Croatian, exemplifying the three main cultures that built Kaitaia to what it is today.

Kaitaia is the ‘capital’ of the Far North, being the main service centre for the area. Here you will find banks, shops, dining and bars, doctors, sports facilities, hospital, police station and places to stay. With its sub-tropical climate most of the year, it makes a perfect get-away destination.

A great base for your Far North adventures, exploring our treasures or taking a coach tour.

Need a bite to eat? Try our excellent choice of restaurants and cafés, experiencing a true taste of the Far North, including our finest wines and seafood.

There is a strong Dalmatian connection stemming from the days of the gum-digging boom, making them one of the seven peoples of the area.

The "Te Ahu Centre" hosts a cinema, museum, library and i-Site, where staff can tell you about the treasures of the Far North. Here you will also find the carved PouPou of our seven peoples - the Dalmation, the Pakeha and the five Maori Iwi.

Before leaving town you must pick up a souvenir, postcard or piece of local art.
