Whare Te Ohonga
At Mainstreet Lodge we are proud of our Whare which grew from the dream of two men. It started with a Maori carving school and the Whare in our grounds grew from some of the carvings made at the school.
The internal Pou Pou (columns) were carved in place on the inside of the Whare and so Whare Te Ohonga was born. Te Ohonga means "The Awakening".
Today the Whare is used each morning as a part of a tour to Cape Reinga and Ninety Mile Beach where guests experience a "Pouwhiri" – a traditional Maori welcome.
Every Tuesday we have yoga and meditation classes and we have had weddings here in this wonderful house.Ask us about organising a special Maori evening performance at Te Whare for your group.
